Republicans may soon see the return of Senator Mitch McConnell to the halls of Congress following a lengthy medical leave. House Oversight Chair James Comer told reporters on Thursday that while he hasn’t spoken with the senator directly, conversations with McConnell’s staff indicate a target return date of September 14, coinciding with the end of the Senate’s current five week summer recess.
Comer noted that he maintains regular contact with McConnell’s team, many of whom hail from his own district in Kentucky. He expressed optimism about the timeline, stating that it is the goal for the senator to be present when the chamber reconvenes next month. When asked specifically if he expects McConnell to be back by mid September, Comer replied that he certainly hopes so.
This potential return follows several months of uncertainty regarding the 84 year old lawmaker’s health. After being hospitalized in June without an initial explanation given to the public, McConnell eventually revealed in July that a fall had led to his admission. Since then, he transitioned through a rehabilitation facility before returning home in early August to continue his recovery process.
Despite these indications from Representative Comer, official channels remain cautious about confirming a specific date. A spokesperson for Senator McConnell previously informed CNN that there are no formal scheduling announcements available at this time, and other aides have deferred back to those earlier statements rather than committing to a firm calendar entry.
